Synth is a variable typeface that channels the vibrant energy of the 1980s, blending retro nostalgia with the futuristic flair of science fantasy. Its versatility makes it ideal for projects that need a bold, dynamic touch while evoking the iconic aesthetics of that era. As a display font, Synth is perfect for titles and headers in movies, posters, and other designs where a striking, eye-catching look is essential.
View live projectThe goal of this project was to create a variable typeface that could be anything I wanted it to be—offering complete creative freedom in both form and function. With this flexibility, I chose to design Synth, a typeface inspired by the bold, high-energy aesthetics of the 1980s.
Readability and Legibility: Create a typeface that is visually striking while remaining functional, ensuring it can be used effectively display settings.
Encourage Creative Expression: Offer unique letterforms and alternate glyphs that allow users to experiment with different typographic styles.
Capture the Aesthetic: Develop a typeface that embodies the neon-soaked, high-energy visuals of the 1980s, drawing inspiration from synthwave, retro-futurism, and science fantasy.
This project presented an exciting challenge in designing a highly readable layout for a physically compact book series. I had to carefully consider spacing, proximity, and the overall organization of the content to ensure optimal readability, especially given the limited space. A significant part of the process involved extensive test printing to fine-tune the typography, ensuring that the text was legible and visually appealing at a smaller scale. This iterative approach allowed me to strike a balance between functionality and aesthetics, creating a practical yet engaging design for users.
